What is a Traineeship?

They provide industry endorsed and accredited training tailored to suit both the trainee’s and the employer’s needs. Traineeships are a workplace based training program, usually combining off the job training with on the job training. Some traineeship can be delivered entirely on the job with the help of a training plan and with assessments by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).  Traineeships are shorter and can be 12 – 36 months in length.

RTA Registration rebates for small businesses

A registration rebate applies to small business owners who employ apprentices between 1 June 2007 and 30 June 2008.
The rebate for the first year will be equal to the full registration charge.  The rebate for the second and third year will be equal to the registration fee only.

Workers Compensation Premium Exemption for Employers of Apprentices
www.workcover.nsw.gov.au or call 13 10 50

For new or renewed policies commencing on or after 31 December 2006, the wages paid to an apprentice will no longer be used to assess the business’ premium.

The amount of premium saved will vary depending the number of apprentices employed, the apprentice’s wage rate, and the employer’s WorkCover Industry Classification (WIC). However, as an example, the premium savings to the employer of a first year junior apprentice carpenter earning $17,128 (including allowances) could be $1,089.91.1

•  You can choose to pay your trainee the special National Training Wage pay rate , depending on his or her schooling and experience. *
Please see the additional page for information on commonwealth government incentives
* Some employers may choose to negotiate a higher wage to attract the trainee with the previous work and life experience their business needs.
Note: Incentives vary according to the DEST criteria. Incentives differ for existing employees. Please contact MEGT on 13 MEGT (136348) to determine the incentives available for your business.

Are My Existing Employees Eligible To Undertake A Traineehip?

Yes. If existing workers undertake a Certificate III or IV qualifications over 24 months or more, you may still be eligible for the Australian Government incentives. An existing worker is someone who has been employed by your business, no matter what department, for more that three (3) months full time or twelve (12) months part time or casual
Incentives are subject to DEST criteria. For existing workers who have no previous qualifications at Certificate III level or higher may be eligible for the same incentives as new entrant trainees.

What Will MTA Charge Me?

MTA NSW will change your business for the training of your existing workers. The cost for existing workers depends on the qualification they undertake.  Please contact MTA NSW for more information on their cost for existing workers on 02 9213 4222 or email training@mtansw.com.au .
For new entrant trainees the only fee charged by MTA NSW is an administration fee^ Those trainees who are enrolled in a qualification within three (3) months of full time employment will incur an administration fee for each year of their enrollment
The administration fee is charged for each year of the trainee's enrollment, this will mean any trainee undertaking a two (2) year traineeship will have to pay the administration fee two (2) times.
Please contact MTA NSW to find about fees charged for traineeships.
^Administration fees change each year.  All registered training organisations are required by DET NSW to charge administration fees to trainees and apprentices in line with those charged by TAFE NSW.

What Happens If My Trainee Cancels Or Doesn't Complete The Training?

If for some reason the trainee cancels from the traineeship you will not have to repay your Australian Government incentives. A cancellation form will need to be filled out by you and sent to the government to inform them. Depending upon the time in which they cancel MTA NSW may refund part or all of all fees paid for training of both existing and new entrant trainees.

How Does The Training Work?

Historically, training has been classroom based with little correlation with the workplace.  For most employers this means that it is difficult to follow up on the individual needs of their apprentice.

MTA NSW will come to your workplace.  Your trainee or apprentice will be visited by our qualified and experienced trainers/assessors at least every 6-8 weeks for trainees and every 4 weeks for apprentices.  They will provide monitoring and one on one training, as well as providing guidance and support throughout the whole training delivery via telephone contact and emails.

As our qualified trainers/assessors are onsite, a new opportunity to become actively involved in training of your apprentices is created.  Having our trainers/assessors at your workplace will also provide you with time to gather feedback about the progression and skills of your employee.
Our trainers combine not only years of experience in the automotive industry, some are also still currently involved in their field of expertise.

As our apprentices and trainees are trained in their workplace they are learning on the vehicles and technology available in their workplace.

MTA NSW is committed to providing a flexible training plan suited to your business.  If you have more that one apprentice or trainee, MTA NSW can work with your business to customise the training delivery to meet your needs. Otherwise individual one- on-one training and support is provided to each apprentice or trainee.
As part of the training delivery provided by MTA NSW we will supply all apprentices and trainees with self paced learning resources that have been developed in consultation with industry.  These resources are a great reference for the apprentice or trainee as they are up to date and specific to their area of study.

MTA NSW includes a 2 week block of training in the start of the apprenticeship delivery. This training has been designed to provide our apprentices with essential non technical skills upfront, making them more productive as an apprentice for your business.  This training will cover occupational health & safety, manual handling, identifying and using tools, communication, team work, dealing with conflict and environmental understanding.

MTA NSW’s approach to assessment is holistic in nature; our aim is to gain an overall picture of the individual’s competence.  We generally assess each unit of competence via a combination of written answers, self assessment, third party assessment, oral questioning and observation/demonstration.  We can however, customise the assessment process to meet an individual’s needs.

Continuous reporting of outcomes to you as employers, via letters or emails, gives you a clear understanding of where your apprentices’ are up to and how they are progressing.
