Changing Industry Perceptions

We are spearheading efforts to transform industry perception, pushing the traditional image of the sector into the rear-view mirror, and embracing the term 'automotive technician' as a more accurate representation of the dynamic, technology-driven sector.

In recent years, the automotive industry has experienced a profound shift, characterised by electrification, advanced IT use, and the adoption of clean, open workspaces. It has been instrumental in driving this evolution, providing high-quality training and advocacy for businesses and individuals across New South Wales.

"Our industry is accelerating towards a future that is electrified, digitised, and sustainable. The automotive workers of today are highly skilled technicians who are at the forefront of this exciting transition. We must align our language and perceptions with the reality of the evolving automotive sector," our chief executive officer, Stavros Yallouridis, remarked.

As part of this drive to shift industry perception, we have been focusing on high-quality training programs, which not only equip individuals with the latest skills but also instil a sense of pride and professionalism in their roles.

"We are committed to ensuring our members and the wider industry are at the cutting edge of automotive technology and service delivery," Yallouridis said.

Alongside fostering a more accurate perception of the industry, we continue to drive advancements in the field, including championing the transition towards electric vehicles. The association actively collaborates with OEMs, technology innovators, and thought leaders globally to ensure the Australian approach to complex industry issues remains best in class.

We are investing substantially to attract new entrants to the workforce, as well as advocating for government funding for VET placements to make the industry attractive for school leavers.

Earlier last year, we launched our own automotive-focused jobs board, allowing school leavers, apprentices, and seasoned automotive professionals to showcase their qualifications and experience, while helping businesses streamline the process of filling vacant roles. The platform addresses the need to bridge the talent gap, the automotive industry currently facing a shortage of approximately 38,000 skilled professionals.

Roles in automotive today require a range of skills that weren’t traditionally associated with the sector, including knowledge of science and technology. This is expected to continue being a focus looking into the future with developments across engineering, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and hydrogen fuel.

“This sector is a genuine pathway to a fulfilling career, with roles spanning business ownership and general management, through to vintage car restoration and motorsports. From a career as a diesel technician in the mining industry to a dealer principal at a car dealership, or even owning an automotive business, there are so many varied paths, some of which are very lucrative," Yallouridis said.

"At MTA NSW, we envision a future where our industry is recognised for its innovation, sustainability, and technological prowess. The term 'automotive technician' is much more than a title – it's a recognition of the skill, knowledge, and dedication required to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the automotive sector."
