The Outlook for End-of-Life Vehicles in Australia

The Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA), of which MTA NSW is a major member, has taken a significant step towards improving end-of-life vehicle management in Australia. Through a collaborative effort with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the MTAA has released a detailed research report which identifies key options to enhance end of life vehicle recovery rates.

A major recommendation in the report is the creation of a co-regulatory product stewardship scheme.  The proposed scheme would address key challenges facing the industry, including the diverse vehicle fleet, fragmented recycling infrastructure, and limited recycling capabilities for non-metal materials. By implementing standardised procedures and tracking systems, a product stewardship scheme would create a more efficient and sustainable system for end-of-life vehicles.

Potential benefits for the automotive industry:

- Increased recycling rates: The scheme will help to reduce landfill waste and conserve valuable resources.

- Improved sustainability: A more sustainable end-of-life vehicle management system aligns with growing environmental concerns.

- Economic opportunities: Increased recycling can create new business opportunities and jobs.
