MTA NSW submission on proposed EV repair classes

MTA NSW has submitted a response to the Department of Customer Services’ proposed changes to create two new repair classes in NSW for Light Vehicle Electric mechanic and Heavy Vehicle Electric mechanic.

Under the proposed changes applicants for the new classes would have to either complete a new Certificate III in electrical vehicle or complete a bridging course to upgrade to new Certificate III qualifications.

In our submission the MTA raised concerns with the Department in relation to the necessity to conduct such a consultation at this time, given that the Motor Dealers and Repairers Regulations are due for a full review in 2023.  We additionally raised concerns with the Department in several areas of the consultation such as not including a new repair class for auto electricians/, the exclusion of motorcycles within the scope of the consultation as well as raising questions on costs and funding.

MTA NSW will be sending comprehensive submissions to the Department of Customer Service throughout 2023 as part of the overhaul of the Motor Dealers and Repairers Regulations review.
